A GUIDE TO THE NUMBERS

The SchoolMatch auditing firm developed the effectiveness level as a way to measure how districts of similar demographic composition should perform. It is derived by analyzing data from dozens or even hundreds of districts that are supposed to be similar to Redlands - called the "cohort" group. The mean is the average score for that group. The district status is how Redlands fared.

In the chart labeled "district results," for example, districts within Redlands' cohort group should have 12 percent of juniors and seniors enrolled in advanced placement courses. The average percentage enrolled in advanced placement courses is 10 percent, while Redlands 16.8 percent of juniors and seniors in the Redlands district are enrolled in advanced placement courses.

Norm-referenced tests are weighted for comparison purposes. Criterion-referenced tests show what percentage of students have mastered a subject area.

CTBS is the California Test of Basic Skills; SAT is the Scholastic Aptitude Test.
